About the market data
What the numbers are and how we got them
Each tower in the locator shows FCC broadband data for the area within 6 miles of the site. The homepage totals use the same data. Here is exactly what we counted.
Source
The FCC Broadband Data Collection. Every internet provider in the US files where it offers service, location by location, twice a year. These are the same filings behind the FCC National Broadband Map. We use the December 2025 filings, as published in the FCC's August 4, 2026 data release.
How we count
- We draw a 6-mile radius around each tower.
- We match FCC locations to that radius using H3 hexagon cells (resolution 8, about 0.3 square miles each). A cell counts if its center is within 6 miles of the tower, so the edge of each area is approximate.
- For every location, we check what fiber, cable and DSL providers report offering there.
- Fixed wireless and satellite filings are left out of the wired tests. Satellite alone would mark almost every location as served.
- Areas around nearby towers overlap. Each tower's numbers count everything inside its own 6-mile area. Portfolio totals count each location once, at its nearest tower: 2,369,217 locations, compared with 2,731,552 if you added up every tower's area.
What each number means
- Serviceable locations
- Buildings where fixed broadband could be installed, from the FCC's Broadband Serviceable Location Fabric. Homes and businesses both count. An apartment building counts once, so this is a count of buildings, not households or people.
- No wired 100/20
- Locations where no fiber, cable or DSL provider reports offering at least 100 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload. A location passes only if a single provider offering meets both speeds. Across all sites: 87,781 locations, 3.7% of the total.
- No wired 25/3
- The same test at 25 Mbps download and 3 Mbps upload. These locations have no wired option at that speed. Across all sites: 81,392 locations.
- Fiber available
- Locations where at least one provider reports fiber service at any speed.
- Wired ISPs in the area
- Fiber, cable and DSL providers that report service at 5% or more of the locations in the 6-mile area.
Limits
- These are provider-reported claims. The FCC accepts challenges to them, but we have not checked them on the ground.
- The 6-mile radius is a consistent way to compare markets. It is not a coverage prediction for any tower and does not account for terrain or line of sight.
- Service changes after the December 2025 filings are not included.
Tower specs
- Structure type
- Self-support (freestanding lattice tower), guyed (held up by guy wires) or monopole (single pole).
- Height
- Overall structure height above ground, in feet.
- Available RAD center
- The antenna mounting height (radiation center) listed as available in our site records, in feet.
- Ground elevation
- Height of the ground at the site above sea level, in feet.
- FCC ASR number
- The site's FCC Antenna Structure Registration. Registration is generally required for structures over 200 feet or near airports, so many shorter sites have none.
